Finally, the news that many of us expected has now been confirmed. Final Fantasy XII is getting the overhaul treatment and will be re-released in 2017 on the PS4 as Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age.

This will not be a full blown remake, akin to the upcoming Final Fantasy VII – but will instead work in a similar fashion to the Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster we received in 2014.

So how will The Zodiac Age be changing the original game? Well for starters all the in-game graphics including models, text and FMV cinematics will be getting the HD treatment. A new orchestrated musical score with the option to use the original BGM tracks will now be included. I have to say, I loved the new music in the Final Fantasy X Remaster and I hope the Zodiac Age will follow that same formulae.

On the topic of the audio, you will be able to switch between the English and Japanese voices and the game will receive full 7.1 surround support.

As far as gameplay is concerned the Zodiac Age will include a brand new ‘Trial’ mode allowing the player to engage in upto 100 battles against all kinds of crazy fiends and this is topped off with shorter load times, an autosave feature and a new speed-toggle option.

For anyone familiar with my Youtube channel it will likley come as no surprise that I am incredibly excited about this announcement. It’s a shame we have over a year to wait but I guess we just have to be patient. I will look forward to covering this new remaster as a video series once it has released so hopefully you guys will follow and enjoy that.

What are your thoughts about The Zodiac Age? Is this a mere cash grab from Square Enix or is it a logical progression from the previous remasters of the Final Fantasy franchise? Let me know your opinions guys and whether you will be purchasing this game.
